How do I know if midwifery care is for me?

We care for women of all ages who are in good health. Women who have serious medical problems are not usually cared for by midwives. If you are uncertain, we would be happy to discuss this with you.

Does my health insurance cover midwifery services ?

Most health insurance companies provide payment for midwifery care.

Will I be cared for by one CNM ?

For pregnancy and birth, we truly work as a group. Each expectant family will have some prenatal visits with each CNM. At the time of birth, the midwife on call will provide labor and birth care.

Where do the CNMs of NMA of WNY,LLP attend births ?

We attend births at the Children’s Hospital site of the Kaleida Health System.

Who provides medical consultation and collaboration, and accepts emergency referrals ?

We maintain a contractual agreement with University Gynecology and Obstetrics, Inc. They are a group practice comprising all women’s health specialties, including perinatology (high risk pregnancy specialists). A member of that group is physically present on call at Children’s Hospital, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For a normal birth:

Can I have pain medication if I need it ?

CNMs continuous support during labor and birth, and their expertise in alternative methods of pain management, usually means that less pain medicine is needed, but it is available.

Can I have another support person besides my partner with me in labor ?

Extra support persons may attend your birth. The midwives recommend that you select your birth team carefully. Please feel free to discuss this with us.

Can my older children be present for my birth ?

Children over the age of 3 years, who have attended special preparations classes are welcome at births.

Can I continue my care with NMA of WNY,LLP after birth ?

We are happy to continue to care for your woman’s health needs before, during, and between pregnancies, as well as after your reproductive years. We can manage family planning, annual exams, breast exams and treatment of infections. Our consulting physician group would be helpful if any complicated problems arise.
