What is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)?
A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is an individual educated in the two
disciplines of nursing and midwifery, who possesses evidence of certification
by the American College of Nurse Midwifery.
The practice of midwifery is the independent management of the care of
essentially healthy women during pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum.
Midwives also provide well gynecologic care, including: adolescent health
care, family planning, preconception counseling, annual exams, and menopausal
care.
CNMs provide safe, satisfying care within a health care system providing
for medical consultation, collaboration and referral for emergency or
acute medical management.
